Ulysses S. Grant Bust

Commissioned by Robert Young. In various private collections.

Master sculptor Frank Porcu's masterfully sculpted but of the Union General Ulysses S. Grant.

Project Overview
This portrayal captures the commanding presence of General Grant during one of the most decisive campaigns of the Civil War. It is in the private collection of Historian John F. Marszalek, who praised the sculpture for its historical depth and dignified portrayal, calling it a landmark in public sculpture.

Artistic Process
This design is informed by both visual and written records from Ulysses S. Grant’s time as General-in-Chief of the Union Armies. The craniofacial likeness is modeled directly from the death mask cast by Karl Gerhardt on July 23, 1885, at Mount McGregor.
